Care at an Encampment
At The Street Dog Coalition, our teams strive to remove barriers to care by making our services accessible where the need is greatest. A recent story from our Columbia, South Carolina team highlights how a pop up veterinary street clinic at a remote homeless encampment made a difference in the lives of many. Led by volunteer Team Lead Dr. Jennifer Bonovich, the Columbia SDC team visited the camp twice. There are over two dozen dogs living at the camp, all of whom are well-loved by their pet parents. Our team was able to provide the following for these pets:
● Vaccinations and microchips
●Spay/Neuter vouchers in partnership with The Animal Mission
● Additional veterinary care arrangements for two dogs in need of radiographs (x-ray)
● Treatment for two dogs diagnosed with an infection
One of the dogs, Luca, had been relentlessly itching, which was causing distress for both him and his person. Our volunteer veterinarians were able to provide medication to treat a minor skin infection. Luca's pet parent was incredibly grateful for the care provided by the Columbia SDC team, knowing their beloved dog would experience relief from his symptoms.
